The Best Places to See Wildlife in Africa

Africa is famous for its wildlife, with animals such as lions, elephants and hippos calling it home, as well as creatures that can’t be found anywhere else. Here are three of the best places to see some of these animals in the wild.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park was created in 1951, and covers almost 15,000 square kilometres of Tanzania.

Each year, the Great Migration takes place here. Animals travel hundreds of kilometres as they move from Serengeti National Park to Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, in search of food and water. The migration includes about 2 million wildebeests and hundreds of thousands of gazelles and zebras.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Found in Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is famous for its gorillas. The 320-square-kilometre park is home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorillas, with about 400 of them living here.

Visitors can go on a tour with a guide in search of some of the gorilla families. Other animals in the park include chimpanzees, elephants and about 350 types of birds.

Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area

Those who love the ocean should visit Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area on South Africa’s east coast, a reef about 5 kilometres offshore from the town of Umkomaas.

Here you can find animals such as manta rays, dolphins and tropical fish, but many people come for the sharks. There are sometimes 50 to 60 ragged-tooth sharks in the same area, and visitors can even scuba dive with them.
